About Seed Libraries

Seed libraries are places that share or lend seeds. Patrons can “check-out” seeds to grow themselves, let “go-to-seed,” and return seeds to the library to share with other patrons.

The purpose of the Sow.Grow.ReapEat program is to provide an alternative to genetically modified seeds, increase biodiversity and plant resilience, and reconnect local people with their food systems.

Check this site regularly for blog updates and upcoming gardening and cooking classes.

The Seed Collection

The seeds available at the El Paso Public Libraries are regionally-adapted, heirloom, organic, or non-GMO seeds. They are not commercial hybrid seeds, which are unsuitable for sharing. Seeds come from High Mowing Organic Seeds, Mountain Valley Co., Native Seeds/SEARCH, Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co., and Eden Brothers.

The Sow.Grow.ReapEat project is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services and Texas State Library and Archives Commission. (2016) .

Membership

  • Anyone with an El Paso Public Library card may check out seeds. Non-residents unable to pay for a card may fill out a membership application.
  • 5 packets of seeds per season per library cardholder (the 5 packet limit has been lifted during this time).
  • Seed packets are free. There are no late or lost fees & no need to return the seeds.
